There's no set answer to this question because it will, to some extent, depend on the type of game you want to play. You can play classic 501 without any special equipment but, in our experience, electronic dartboards are far superior and we think they're well worth the investment.
If you want to play a variant of 501 that requires scoring such as Cricket or Cutthroat then you'll need a complete set of regular darts with numbers on them. These are usually referred to as bristle-type because they use natural materials rather than plastic. Plastic-tipped darts that don't have numbers allow you to play any version of 501 but may be less accurate and easier to lose if you're playing in a bar!
We'd recommend buying at least a three-piece set since two pieces are barely enough for one player let alone two or three competing for the highest score. Special four- and five-piece sets exist but these tend to be expensive and overkill unless you plan on hosting regular tournaments!
