Installing a side mount for your SKS can be done in different ways. This option would entail drilling/tapping certain hardware into place with screws provided along just one rail system - again something easy enough even if you are comfortable with this type of work but it's not for everyone which is its biggest drawback.
The second disadvantage is you have a big hunk of metal swinging off the side of the rifle when the scope gets mounted which makes it harder to hold level for that perfect shot and it's just something else to hang on things when you are walking in the woods or simply loading it in your truck for a range day.
After you get it installed the mount usually removes easily with the release of the tension bar which is a huge advantage.
With the side mount, you can get your scope height high enough for co-witness on the iron sights without needing high-rise scope rings which is another big advantage.
These mounts are used a lot for sniper scopes and they not only work on the SKS but they work with the AK-47 too. It is worth mentioning that not all manufacturers are interchangeable.
