The Arkansas Toothpick knife is named as a reference to the rough nature associated with those occupying lowlands in America's Mississippi Delta. Traveling journalists from Europe often made up stories about seeing men and old boys picking their teeth with giant knives that they dubbed "Arkansas toothpicks." It usually has an oversized blade, often double-edged & with a sharp acute point and a double quillon guard - similar looking to the bowies of yesteryear.
James Black is remembered for his improvement in the details of the Bowie knife to create this large knife. A well-balanced heavy blade with a 12-to-20-inch pointy straight edge that can be used for thrusting and slitting throats. James is credited with inventing the Arkansas toothpick.

When facing the wilds of North America, back when trading posts were established by the Hudson Bay Company, a trapper needed a knife that would be a weapon and a tool.
