The 1911 is one of if not the most customized handguns on the market today. The fact that it won two world wars and has been a favorite of the special forces doesn't hurt anything either. It is made by most major gun manufacturers and then there are custom gun companies that deal almost exclusively with the 1911 like Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, Les Baer, and a host of others.
Just like cell phone cases, cars and trucks, clothes and watches we like for our guns to be different than our buddy's gun even if we both have identical high-end 1911's like a Les Baer. Grips are an easy way to show your style and separate your gun from your buddy's and one of the greatest accessories available for the 1911.
A grip is one of the most important parts of a handgun. It is what you hold onto when firing the weapon, and it needs to be comfortable and fit well in your hand. Different grips are available for the 1911 handgun, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks.
One of the most popular grip types for a 1911 is the wood grip. Wood grips are attractive and provide a good grip on the weapon. However, they can be easily dinged and prone to weathering, which can make them difficult to handle.
Another popular type of grip is the rubber grip. Rubber grips are lightweight and provide a good grip on the weapon. However, they can also be slippery, which can make them difficult to handle.
The most popular has become the G10 grip. G10 is the designation for a glass-based epoxy resin laminate. What that means is that you take a glass-based cloth (fiberglass, in other words), soak it in an epoxy resin, and then using heat and pressure compress it into the shape you want. This process is the same for micarta and carbon fiber handles, but the difference is that G10 uses glass fibers while the other two do not. G10 provides unique color combinations and allows for aggressive patterns that provide excellent grip in every situation.
Some companies offer plastic grips but over time they tend to become a bit brittle and can crack easily which is why the G10 grips have pretty much made the plastic 1911 grip obsolete.
Other custom grips have been introduced into the market with limited success because while they look cool they don't really offer a firm grip. Carbon fiber and aluminum grips are available in an array of colors with deep grooves for your fingers to help you grip your gun but they don't offer the grip that a textured grip provides.
Some companies offer "thin grips" for people with smaller hands or if you just want to decrease the overall size of the 1911 overall grip but they require thin grip screws and bushings to keep them from rubbing the magazine.
